The Anatomy of a Good BIM Object
- Geometry – accurate footprint, connection points, clearances, and swing or access zones, at a detail level that documents well without bloating the model.
- Parametric behavior – the object flexes across the real product range instead of hard-coding one size.
- Product data – manufacturer, model number, dimensions, performance values, finish, certifications, and links back to your documentation.
- Classification – the codes and categories that let the object land correctly in schedules and cost plans.
- Identity – correct category, naming, and metadata so the object is findable and unambiguous inside a crowded project.
Geometry Versus Data: Where Manufacturers Get It Backwards
Most manufacturers over-invest in geometry and under-invest in data. It is an understandable instinct – geometry is the part you can see in a screenshot, and it is the part that looks impressive in a marketing review.
But specification decisions run on data. An architect filtering for a fixture with a specific flow rate, a fire rating, an acoustic value, or a sustainability certification is filtering on parameters. If your object carries beautiful geometry and empty parameters, it loses to a plainer competitor object that answers the question.
The practical rule: model to the detail the drawing set needs, and populate every parameter a specifier could reasonably filter, schedule, or tag on.
IFC, COBie, and Open BIM
Not every project runs on Revit alone. Public work, international projects, and owner-driven handover requirements increasingly ask for IFC exports and COBie-compliant data. That is not a separate deliverable so much as a discipline applied while the object is built: correct IFC entity mapping, correct property sets, and asset data structured so it survives export instead of dropping out.
Objects built without that discipline export as generic proxies – visually present, informationally empty – which defeats the reason the owner asked for IFC in the first place.
The QA Checklist We Run on Every BIM Object
- Flexes correctly across the full parametric range, not just at default values.
- File size and geometry complexity within budget for the object's expected instance count.
- Correct category, subcategory, and material assignment for accurate visibility control.
- Shared parameters present, correctly typed, and schedulable.
- Naming consistent with the rest of the library and predictable to a new user.
- Placement behavior sane: correct host, correct insertion point, correct orientation.
- Renders and shades correctly at coarse, medium, and fine detail levels.
- Opens cleanly in every delivered version, with no warnings or unresolved references.
- Reviewed by a practicing architect against how the product is actually specified and installed.
Full-Catalog Object Libraries
One excellent object gets used once. A complete, consistent library gets adopted as a standard. When a firm learns that your objects behave predictably, they stop evaluating each one and start reaching for your product line by default – which is the actual point of the investment.
That is why consistency across the catalog matters more than perfection on any single object, and why we build libraries as programs rather than as a series of one-off files.
